4.3.1 Yerba Buena in the spring of 1837
Description
Illustration (from an original drawing by Jean J. Vioget) showing Yerba Buena (now called San Francisco) in the year 1837. Only two residences are visible, the house of Jacob Leese and the “tent” of William Richardson. Juana’s house was on the other side of Telegraph Hill. The question of who was the first non-native settler of Yerba Buena has been disputed, with Leese claiming here that he was the first resident.
