5.2.6 Atahualpa Inka and Friar Vicente de Valverde in Cajamarca

Description

Guamán Poma was a native Andean nobleman (in modern-day Peru) who wrote this long letter with accompanying images to the king of Spain. Pomo’s letter documented the Spaniards’ poor treatment of the native Andean people. This image is entitled “Atahualpa is in the City of Cajamarca on his Throne.” Atahualpa was the king of the Incas (a broader group that also included Andean people). The men kneeling on the ground in front of him are a Spanish priest and a soldier.
