As casualties began to mount, Americans increasingly began to question the purpose of the war and public opinion turned against the war effort. Individuals who objected to the war searched for ways to avoid the draft. Young people, like those pictured in the image from Fullerton College in Southern California, began to organize against the draft. They educated other students on how to file as a conscientious objector and avoid being drafted. What is a conscientious objector? Why do you think individuals objected to the war in Vietnam? Why do you think people wanted to avoid the draft? How did college culture contribute to growing antiwar sentiment?

Ask students to define a conscientious objector and to consider why individuals might have objected to the war in Vietnam. Prompt students to consider other reasons why individuals might have wanted to avoid the draft. Ask them to think about how college culture might have contributed to growing antiwar sentiment. Tap into students' prior knowledge about the counterculture movement and growing student mobilization in movements for equality.
