National Organization for Women (NOW)

Ephemera

Defend Abortion Rights!; California social, protest, and counterculture movement ephemera collection, SOC MOV EPH; box 2, folder20; California Historical Society.

The National Organization for Women (NOW) is a feminist organization founded in 1966. NOW organized in response to frustration over the failure of the government to enforce laws banning gender-based discrimination in employment and education. Women in NOW have fought for a variety of issues, including equal pay, maternity leave, child care, equal access to education, and job opportunities. Examine the flyer closely and discuss these questions: What rights is the National Organization for Women fighting for here? What organizational strategies and forms of resistance are they using? In what ways do the two cartoons and the text of the flyer call attention not only to the issue of reproductive rights but also to issues of sexism and classism?
